Deres indsats f\u00f8rte til udviklingen af en harpiks baseret p\u00e5 podning af akrylonitrilpolymer p\u00e5 stivelsesmolekyler, hvilket resulterede i et nyt absorberende materiale, der kunne absorbere mere end 400 gange sin v\u00e6gt uden at frigive flydende vand under tryk.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samtidig p\u00e5begyndte japanske virksomheder, som ikke var involveret i USDA's forskning, uafh\u00e6ngige unders\u00f8gelser med stivelse, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), akrylsyre, polyvinylalkohol (PVA) og isobutylenmaleinsyreanhydrid (IMA).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I 1970'erne blev SAP brugt kommercielt for f\u00f8rste gang, prim\u00e6rt i hygiejniske engangsprodukter snarere end til de oprindeligt tilt\u00e6nkte jordforbedringsform\u00e5l.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gennembruddet kom i 1982, da SAP blev indarbejdet i babybleer i Europa, og kort tid efter blev det introduceret i superabsorberende babybleer i Japan af UniCharm.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teknologiske fremskridt har siden reduceret brugen af stivelsespodede superabsorberende polymerer i hygiejniske engangsprodukter, hvor de fleste superabsorberende polymerer nu er tv\u00e6rbundne akrylhomopolymerer (typisk natriumneutraliserede) i disse produkter.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mods\u00e6tning hertil er superabsorbenter, der bruges til jordforbedring, ofte tv\u00e6rbundne akryl-akrylamid-co-polymerer (normalt kaliumneutraliserede).
